During their senior year, studio majors are required to take the Studio Concentration Seminar which focuses on the development of an individual body of work.Â
Students are provided with individual studios in the Millard Art Center, travel to exhibitions in the New England region and New York, interact with visiting artists, and have their work regularly reviewed by 51С»Æ³µ faculty from visual arts and outside departments.
The first semester of the Studio Concentration Seminar focuses on developing a personal direction, establishing a rigorous studio practice, engaging in frequent peer critiques, and developing an artist statement.
The second semester of the seminar continues these practices and allows students to further hone an independent body of work that culminates with the planning and execution of a group exhibition mounted in the Cantor Art Gallery under the guidance of the gallery staff and the visual arts faculty. Students also learn about artists' professional practices and options for careers and graduate study.
Studio art majors are required to take the fall semester (VAST 300) and are eligible for the spring semester (VAST 301). While both semesters are strongly recommended for the major, students will be admitted to the spring semester based on an evaluation of their work by studio art faculty. Only students taking the spring semester, Studio Concentration Seminar 2, will participate in the senior exhibition in Cantor Art Gallery.
