About the Speaker: Rev. George Karuvelil, S.J. is the McFarland Center's International Visiting Jesuit Fellow for the Spring 2017 semester. A member of the Jesuit theologate at Pune, India, he is professor of philosophy at Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, where he previously served as dean of faculty of philosophy. Fr. Karuvelil edited the book, "Romancing the Sacred? Towards an Indian Christian Philosophy of Religion" and is editor of "Jnanadeepa: Pune Journal of Religious Studies." He has authored over 50 articles, on a wide range of topics including epistemology, hermeneutics, ecology, politics, and society. At 51С»Æ³µ, Fr. Karuvelil is teaching "Philosophers, God & India," and is studying the epistemologies underlying Christian theology, and the relationship between faith and reason.
About the Talk: By focusing on universally available kind of experience known as "nature mysticism," Fr. Karuvelil shows how the theistic understanding of God, which is a God that is always present in the world and concerned about it, can be rejuvenated.
