Carol Lieberman has been one of the leading exponents of Baroque violin performance for three decades, and is equally well known for her performances of 19th and 20th century violin repertoire. She has concertized throughout Europe and North and South America, and frequently performs for radio and television, including Radio Nacional Espana, Belgian Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and National Public Radio.
Ms Lieberman performs as violinist of the Lieberman-Kroll Duo, the Early Music Ensemble of Boston, and is first violinist and founder of the Quartetto Tomasini, a period instrument string quartet.
The scope of Ms Lieberman鈥檚 versatility can be seen by her performances of the complete Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord of J.S. Bach, in such cities as Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, Boston and San Francisco, and her recordings of works by such twentieth century composers as Erno Dohnanyi, Andor Kovach, Shirish Korde, Elliott Carter and Olivier Messiaen. Her recordings have received the highest critical acclaim. Among her releases with Mark Kroll are the Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord of J.S. Bach which Stereo Review awarded the 鈥淩ecording of Special Merit鈥 noting that 鈥淟ieberman produces a beautifully focused, sweet sound that balances perfectly with the harpsichord.鈥 She has also recorded a world premiere album of sonatas by Simon LeDuc, an album of sonatas of C.P.E. Bach and J.C. Bach, about which Atlantic Magazine wrote: 鈥渉er playing is technically flawless and rhythmically vital鈥, and a compact disc of Schubert鈥檚 Three Sonatinas for Violin and Fortepiano. Recordings of 20th century music include Carter's Riconoscenza, 惭别蝉蝉颈补别苍鈥檚 Quartet for the End of Time, 顿辞丑苍补苍测颈鈥檚 Sonata for Violin and Piano, Serenade for String Trio, and the second Quintet for Piano and Strings, which was 鈥....highly recommended鈥 by Fanfare Magazine. She has also released a CD of the 1681 Sonate 藛 Violino Solo of H.I.F. von Biber. Her most recent releases have been on two CD鈥檚 of contemporary music made possible by grants from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Inc.
Ms Lieberman has been concerto soloist with the Boston Classical Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the CBC Festival Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Associazione Musicale Romana, the Belgrade Chamber Orchestra, Handel & Haydn Society, and the Masterworks Chorale, where she has served as concertmistress since 1980. Her concerto performances include Sibelius, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi and Bach, as well as all the Brandenburg Concerti at Symphony Hall in Boston, Boston University, and at the Connecticut Early Music Festival. She has appeared as guest artist with numerous summer festivals such as Grand Teton, Bay Chamber, Mostly Mozart and Radovljica in Slovenija.
Carol Lieberman received her DMA degree from Yale University, and her awards include a Fellowship at the Mary Ingraham Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College. She has been head of the string department at the University of Maine at Orono, and is currently Associate Professor of Music at the College of the 51小黄车 where she is Director of the 51小黄车 Chamber Players. She also served on the faculty of the Boston University Department of Historical Performance from 1978-2003, where she taught 鈥渕odern鈥 violin, Baroque violin and chamber music.
