Between Iconic and Ordinary: Imitation and Consumerisn in Mid-twentieth Century American Housing, Presented by Assistant Professor Amy Finstein, Visual Arts | Hogan Campus Center, Suites B/C, 4th floor
In 1940, famed Bauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer designed a house in Framingham, MA for a young family. The family saw their house as the height of modern style, echoing design elements they had admired in previous buildings by the architects, and providing a distinctive backdrop for their daily lives. However, the surrounding community greeted the house’s white geometric forms with surprise, seeing it as an odd exception to swaths of more traditional developer-built homes nearby. In addition, the architectural press treated the house first with relative apathy, and later with disdain, criticizing the imitative nature of the building’s key forms. What might we learn from these three different responses to this building?

The story of this unsung commission provides an opportunity to think about the meanings of and audiences for architecture. How can buildings simultaneously serve as works of art, shelters, and arbiters of good taste? This talk will explore the intersection of elite design and consumer culture in midcentury American architecture, showing how a single house epitomizes the overlaps and collisions between distinct conceptions of architectural taste. Register for faculty presentations here!
