About the Speaker: Jalane Schmidt, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, has been doing field research in Cuba for 20 years. Her book is "Cachita's Streets: The Virgin of Charity, Race and Revolution in Cuba," (Duke University Press, 2015).
About the Talk: Schmidt explores popular devotion to the Virgin of Charity, Cuba's patron saint, and how people of different racial and religious identities have represented her through Cuba's history and revolution. Her talk is part of the McFarland Center's initiative on , to explore the religious lives and practices of Catholics around the world.
