Justice & Equity

Justice and equity aren’t relegated to a single office or department. They are the foundation of the Jesuit mission and are embedded in every aspect of campus you experience.

  • Thought-Provoking & Self-Reflecting Events

51С»Æ³µ brings to campus thought leaders who help us examine our place in the world. From looking back to the College’s ties to slavery to its role today in fighting injustice, we welcome the difficult and comfortable questions.

The transition from high school to college is difficult. Each department on campus is here to help you. Several offices partner each year to assist first-year students in meeting faculty and staff helping to build lasting relationships.

  • Justice & Equity is Everyone’s Responsibility

The work of the JEBI office extends to every office on campus. JEBI helps to create affinity groups and hosts workshops to educate and train faculty and staff with the goal of creating an empathetic, supportive and welcoming campus.

Faculty & Staff Training

JEBI Foundations Certificate Program

This six-course justice, equity, belonging, and identity certificate program will help faculty and staff acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate within 51С»Æ³µâ€™ diverse and inclusive community, as well as the local community and beyond. This program will help 51С»Æ³µ begin that shift in understanding from competence to humility resulting in the acknowledgment and respect of all colleagues' individuality, while promoting empathy, connection, and a healthier campus community.

Inclusive Hiring Training

This training is designed for faculty and staff who plans to participate in the hiring process, such as search committees. Inclusive Hiring Training helps to enhance inclusivity and equity, as well as mitigate bias, throughout the hiring process.

Affinity Groups

Affinity groups are employee-led groups formed around interests, backgrounds, identities, and common bonds. By engaging with our affinity groups, 51С»Æ³µ staff and faculty help foster a positive work environment and contribute to the College’s mission by demonstrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion. In partnership with Human Resources, the JEBI Office is proud to support Outfront, an affinity group for LGBTQIA+-identified faculty, staff, and their allies, and Sister2Sister, an affinity group for faculty and staff who identify as women of color or are committed to supporting faculty and staff who identify as women of color.

Future Faculty Institute

The Future Faculty Institute seeks to empower prospective faculty from marginalized populations by providing a critical platform for them to explore academic departments, establish meaningful connections with faculty and staff, engage in research discussions and workshops, and immerse themselves in the vibrant community and campus culture of 51С»Æ³µ. Recognizing the importance of diversity in higher education, this program is dedicated to fostering equity and cultivating a sense of belonging within academia.

Consultation and Collaboration

Faculty and staff can contact the JEBI Office for consultation related to justice, equity, belonging, and identity. Our team can offer support, guidance, and best practices, as well as workshops and training sessions for departments and groups. Our offerings are tailored in collaboration with the requestors to ensure we can meet our colleagues' needs.

We collaborate with campus partners to offer programming and events that bring faculty and staff together for professional development, learning, networking, and connection.

Assessment

Through the development of campus-wide surveys, the facilitation of focus groups, and the evaluation of workshops, training sessions, and programs, the JEBI Office continuously assesses the College's progress toward our inclusive excellence goals and works to foster a sense of belonging in a welcoming campus environment.

While we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, we acknowledge that much work remains.

The endless lived experiences of each individual on campus strengthens the 51С»Æ³µ experience. By living in a community that embraces uncomfortable topics, you’ll challenge the status quo and build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future. These ideals are baked into the Jesuit mission formed by Saint Ignatius more than 500 years ago with pillars such as cura personalis - caring for the whole person - and magis - a commitment to the “more universal good."
